SEPTEMBER 2022

Unshakeable confidence in nursing and midwifery care

New learning resource

We are pleased to mark the important milestone of National Day for Truth and Reconciliation with the release of our Indigenous Cultural Safety, Cultural Humility, and Anti-racism Practice Standard Companion Guide.

This guide was created to help nurses and midwives understand and apply BCCNM's Indigenous Cultural Safety, Cultural Humility, and Anti-racism practice standard. It incorporates Indigenous experiences to help nurses and midwives learn about culturally unsafe care and reflect on their own practice.

To the midwives, nurses, and nurse practitioners of B.C.,

It is almost two and a half years since the COVID-19 pandemic was declared a public health emergency. It's difficult for me to remember what life was like before this, to be honest. Review of our complaints process

In March 2022, BCCNM issued a Request for Proposals (RFP) to review BCCNM's complaints process to reflect the principles of cultural safety, cultural humility, and anti-racism. We are pleased to report we have engaged an organization and they have begun the review.

The review will seek to build consultative and collaborative relationships to develop an Indigenous patient feedback process that fosters trust and healing. The values of the “Four Rs"—respect, relevance, reciprocity, and responsibility—will guide the approach to an effective and restorative grievance practice.

BCCNM will share the results of the review and next steps in early 2023.

Inquiry, Discipline, and Monitoring updates

BCCNM publishes a variety of professional conduct notices on its website. These notices include consent agreements, Discipline Committee and Inquiry Committee notices, and Inquiry and Discipline hearing notices. While all of these notices are public information, only exceptional outcomes (i.e., Inquiry Committee order, Discipline order, hearing outcome) and circumstances (i.e., discipline hearing) are highlighted in registrant newsletters.
