Concerns about practice

Celia, the head of the midwifery department, has concerns about some of Sara's competencies as a midwife. During a recent hospital delivery, Sara appeared not to understand the basic principles of fetal health surveillance and was unable to recognize signs of fetal distress.

Derek, the perinatal nurse who reported the situation to Celia, told Celia that Sara had difficulty making life saving decisions and required direction during the neonatal resuscitation. Based on the reported concerns and the risk to public safety, the hospital restricts Sara's privileges and files a complaint with BCCNM.

BCCNM and the College of Physicians and Surgeons of B.C. have been collaborating on a new standard, Indigenous Cultural Safety, Cultural Humility and Anti-Racism.

Midwifery prescribing survey

The Midwives Association of BC is seeking to understand what clinical drug information resources midwives are currently using and invites feedback on the BCRM Ref App. Survey closes on Jan. 27 at midnight.

Inquiry, Discipline, and Monitoring updates

BCCNM publishes a variety of professional conduct notices on its website. These notices include consent agreements, Discipline Committee and Inquiry Committee notices, and Inquiry and Discipline hearing notices. While all of these notices are public information, only exceptional outcomes (i.e., Inquiry Committee order, Discipline order, hearing outcome) and circumstances (i.e., discipline hearing) are highlighted in registrant newsletters.
