Registered midwives medications and substances survey: results and next steps

Aug 8, 2022

In June 2022, we sent a survey to all midwives about the proposed Registered Midwives Medications and Substances: Standards, Limits, and Conditions.

This proposed standard will replace these four documents:

  • Registered Midwives Prescribing, Ordering and Administering Therapeutics: Standards, Limits, and Conditions
  • Registered Midwives Prescribing, Ordering and Administering Controlled Substances: Standards, Limits, and Conditions
  • Registered Midwives Prescribing, Ordering and Administering Drugs for Sexually Transmitted Infections: Standards, Limits, and Conditions
  • Registered Midwives Prescribing, Ordering and Administering Contraceptives: Standards, Limits, and Conditions.

We would like to thank the 28 respondents who responded (6.6% response rate).

What we heard

Most respondents felt the proposed standards, limits and conditions were easy to understand and set clear expectations. Respondents also provided feedback on what types of learning resources would help support midwives in understanding the proposed limits and conditions.

There were several common themes. Respondents:

  • rely heavily on the current standards
  • feel the proposed changes will require time and support to adjust to
  • have concerns about some of the proposed requirements

We will be reviewing this feedback in detail and will continue to develop and consult on the proposed standards, limits, and conditions this fall.

We thank midwives for their engagement—your feedback is valued and important.
