The
Controlled Prescription Program recently completed a project to harmonize the controlled prescription duplicate pad and the methadone pad to streamline prescribing for registrants. Once implemented, all drugs requiring a duplicate prescription can be prescribed using the single harmonized pad (view sample form).
The controlled prescription program advisory committee is currently working on the rollout timeline for the new pads and aims to have them available by June 2021. Prescribers will no longer need to order and use separate pads and can look forward to a simpler prescribing process.
Prescriptions written on the original pads will continue to be accepted after the new pad is introduced, so nurses and nurse practitioners should use up their supply before starting a new pad.
A note for RNs and RPNs
RNs and RPNs who have
met the conditions for prescribing to treat opioid use disorder are only authorized at this time to prescribe buprenorphine-naloxone (Suboxone). They cannot prescribe methadone. Visit the
RN and
RPN pages for more information.
