On June 4, 2025, the BCCNM board rescinded the registered midwives Policy on Registrants Infected with Blood-borne Pathogens and in its place approved the Preventing Transmission of Blood-borne Viruses practice standard.
These changes take effect July 4, 2025.
Context
The Policy on Registrants Infected with Blood-borne Pathogens was established in 2017 and set the expectations for safeguarding a client's health by minimizing the risk of transmitting blood-borne viruses (BBVs).
As midwives frequently perform exposure-prone procedures (EPPs), it was determined that a revised standard for BBVs was required. The revised standard clarifies expectations, better reflects current evidence, and aligns with BCCNM's regulatory approach of right-touch regulation. Notable changes are the removal of requirements to self-report BBV status to BCCNM and the removal of clinical content.
