Revisions to NP scope of practice: Mental Health Act and capacity assessments

Jun 10, 2025

On June 4, 2025, the BCCNM board approved revisions to the NP scope of practice mental health and capacity assessments standards, limits, and conditions to rescind the limit requiring registrants to conduct an in-person assessment before involuntarily admitting a client, and in its place, implement a broader standard that emphasizes that in-person assessments are performed if possible unless certain conditions are met.

This allows nurse practitioners to exercise professional judgement in selecting another assessment method that is timely and effective, and ensures safe patient care if necessary.

These revisions take effect July 4, 2025.
