On Nov. 27, 2025, the BCCNM approved revisions to the Registered Midwives Specialized Practice Certification Framework for Vacuum-Assisted Emergency Delivery, changing the requirement to a limit and condition of practice to enable RMs to access supervised deliveries.
This change takes effect immediately.
Background
The initial framework was approved by the BCCNM board in September 2024 and required midwives to have a minimum of three supervised vacuum-assisted deliveries prior to certification. We have moved this from a requirement prior to certification to a limit and condition on practice after certification.
This revision removes barriers to midwives becoming certified after completing a BCCNM-approved course that includes theory and simulation while maintaining the requirement to have a minimum of three supervised vacuum-assisted deliveries as a condition of practice.
