Practice standard updates

On Nov. 27, 2025, the BCCNM board approved updated additional education requirements for LPNs performing oxygen administration, digital stimulation/rectal disimpaction, IV access, and IV medication administration. They also approved a minor edit relating to wound care.

Entry-level competencies update

Entry-level competencies for both LPNs and RNs are currently undergoing a national review, which is anticipated to be completed in Spring 2026. Nurses in B.C. will be invited to provide feedback on the draft competencies in early 2026 via a survey and consultations with key partners.

Now available: two new scope of practice learning modules

Scope of practice: The LPN, RN, and RPN scope of practice documents were rescinded on June 2, and the content transitioned to practice standards and learning resources. To continue supporting faculty in delivering regulatory education to students, we have introduced two more new learning modules about scope of practice.

Engagement opportunities

  1. BCCNM is seeking nurse educator feedback on drafted revisions to the Regulatory Supervision of Students practice standard. This anonymous survey will take 10 minutes to complete and will close on Jan. 2, 2026.

  2. The Delegation to Unregulated Care Providers practice standard is being revised to align with the Health Professions and Occupations ActIf you’d like to provide feedback, visit the BCCNM Engagement & Insights page.
  3. BCCNM is seeking input from nurse educators on the Boundaries in the Nurse- Client Relationship and Conflict of Interest practice standards. Specifically, BCCNM would like to understand:
  • Are there any standards within the Boundaries in the Nurse- Client Relationship or Conflict of Interest practice standards that you find difficult to understand or apply?
  • What should BCCNM consider when reviewing Boundaries in the Nurse-Client Relationship and Conflict of Interest practice standards?
  • Are there any public safety risks not addressed by these practice standards?

Draft HPOA bylaws posted

The new Health Professions and Occupations Act (HPOA) will replace the Health Professions Act on April 1, 2026. In preparation for this change, BCCNM is redrafting its bylaws to align with the new provisions in the HPOA.

BCCNM is seeking feedback from members of the public, registrants (licensees), health partners, and Indigenous leaders on the draft bylaws.

We have recently posted the last batch of bylaws for review, including:

Part 8 — Professional Responsibilities

Part 9 — Licensee Records

Part 10 — Delegation and Students

Part 12 — Public Protection

Consultation remains open until Jan. 12, 2026.

Cultural Safety and Humility pocket guide

We’ve developed a pocket guide that highlights key elements of the Indigenous Cultural Safety, Cultural Humility, and Anti-racism Practice Standard Companion Guide. To request printed copies, contact learning@bccnm.ca.

Updating key contacts

The BCCNM Education Program Review team maintains a list of key contacts for each approved education program. This list is used to communicate regulatory changes impacting educators and provide updates on the EPR process. If you need to update the contacts for your education program, please email epr@bccnm.ca to update our records.
