On December 7, 2020 a panel of the Inquiry Committee approved a Consent Agreement between BCCNM and Charlene Rae of Victoria, BC, to remediate practice and conduct issues occurring between January 2017 and November 2018. Issues relate to:
- Failing to safely administer medications;
- Failing to document assessments, interventions and responses to interventions;
- Failing to attend to a resident who had fallen and hit her head;
- Failing to follow up on bloodwork results and failing to inform the oncoming shift; and
- Failing to assess and intervene when a resident's catheter was bypassing blood.
The Registrant has voluntarily agreed to terms equivalent to limits and conditions on practice, including: completion of an orientation where she will have her skills and competencies for the workplace confirmed followed by a period of oversight in the workplace. If she returns to nursing practice that involves direct patient care, she will be prohibited from being in-charge, working as sole nurse, or providing regulatory supervision to students for a period equivalent to 6 months of full time practice or 900 hours, whichever is greater. She has also agreed to a reprimand for her conduct, to completion of remedial education related to ethics, accountability and responsibility, communication, documentation, medication administration, professional standards, clinical decision-making, dementia care and palliative care, a Regulatory Practise Consultation program, and to develop and complete a learning plan.
The Inquiry Committee is satisfied that the terms will protect the public.
