Confirming Problems:
Making a Decision

Case Study

Making a Decision

It was clear to everyone that low staffing levels presented a risk to clients and staff. Through their careful analysis, they determined that registered nurses were finding it difficult to practice according to agency policies and procedures and CRNBC's Standards. They also knew that patients were not receiving the care they might have had under different circumstances. They often had little time to complete their charting or do rounds. On many occasions, patients only saw a registered nurse when they rang the call bell.

Based on their analysis, it became clear to everyone that taking action to address the situation was the only solution if they wanted to improve their working conditions and to meet Standards for Registered Nursing Practice.

Although it felt overwhelming at first, the decision to work together to address the problem helped staff to feel more in control. They felt energized. At least they were going to do something to move the situation along, to get help and hopefully resolve the problem.

Reflections on the Case Study

What are the challenges associated with deciding to take action on a problem?

  • Are you prepared to speak out?
  • Could there be reprisals?
  • How much work is involved in collecting data to support your cause?
