Jan 25, 2024

The BCCNM board on Jan. 25, 2024, amended the NP Scope of Practice: Standards, Limits, and Conditions by rescinding the limit on prescribing anabolic steroids and their derivatives. This change takes effect immediately.

Background

On Dec. 1, 2023, BCCNM was notified of an exemption under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act (CDSA) titled Subsection 56(1) Class Exemption for Nurse Practitioners to Prescribe Anabolic Steroids for Therapeutic Use.

The board on Dec. 20, 2023, approved the immediate rescinding of the limit related to related to amphetamines and other designated drugs. The limit on prescribing anabolic steroids has now also been rescinded, meaning NPs can prescribe steroids beyond testosterone.
