New Certified Practice CM course and updates to RN (Certified Practice): Acting within Autonomous Scope of Practice

Jun 5, 2025

On June 4, 2025, the BCCNM board approved a new optional Certified Practice – Contraceptive Management course for the insertion and removal of intrauterine contraception. This change is reflected in the revised RN (Certified Practice) practice standard, Acting within Autonomous Scope of Practice. Registered nurses (RNs) certified in Reproductive Health: Contraceptive Management (RNs certified in CM) may choose to complete this optional course if they plan to incorporate intrauterine insertion and removal into their autonomous scope of practice.

These changes take effect immediately.

Background

BCCNM scope of practice was amended in November 2024 to allow RNs certified in CM to prescribe, dispense, administer, insert, or remove any type of contraception, not just hormonal contraception. In order to develop competencies for insertion or removal of intrauterine contraception (IUC), additional education will be required and DSTs for IUC insertion and removal will be developed by NNPBC.

The Intrauterine Contraception (IUC) Insertion Preceptorship for Registered Nurses with Reproductive Health: Contraceptive Management Certified Practice offered by the Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada is approved as the required course for IUC insertion and removal.
