Five-year anniversary of the "In Plain Sight" report

Oct 29, 2025

This November marks five years since the release of the In Plain Sight report. The report investigated the extent of Indigenous-specific racism in B.C.'s health-care system and highlighted the devastating, ongoing impact and the tragic health outcomes for Indigenous families and communities in the province.

The report reinforced what Indigenous Peoples already know and have been telling system leaders: Indigenous-specific racism continues to exist throughout our health-care system and is a direct cause of harm to Indigenous Peoples. The findings underscored the urgent need for not just acknowledging the truth but the responsibility of all system partners to take swift action to dismantle systemic racism and ensure culturally safe and equitable care is made accessible to everyone.

Everything we do at BCCNM is influenced by our commitment to addressing, disrupting, and dismantling Indigenous-specific racism in the health regulatory system. In September 2025, we released our updated action plan, Redressing Harm to Indigenous Peoples in the Health-care System: Relational Accountability in Action. The In Plain Sight report served as one of the foundational reports of our action planning and continues to be our overarching guide in advancing this important work. We always believe in leading with the truth, and we know there is so much work to do. We are moving forward in this journey with intention and humility.

We encourage you to read the report and visit our website for latest updates and progress reports. Please also share your thoughts, questions, or feedback with us at culturalsafety@bccnm.ca.
