A message to nurses and midwives across British Columbia

Jan 7, 2026

Natasha Prodan-Bhalla

From Natasha Prodan-Bhalla, Registrar & CEO

To all nurses and midwives in British Columbia:

I am honored to join BCCNM as Registrar & CEO. As a leader and a practising NP, I recognize the significant responsibilities and challenges you face in today's complex health-care environment.

I am committed to fostering a culture where diverse perspectives are valued, open dialogue is encouraged, and meaningful change is possible. My goal is to create an environment that supports innovation and transformation within the health-care system, always prioritizing respect and collaboration.

Key priorities in the coming months

Over the next 90 days, my priority will be to listen, learn, and stay grounded in the work of the regulator:

  • Preparing for the Health Professions and Occupations Act (HPOA), new overarching legislation coming April 1.
  • Advancing internal improvements to streamline and clarify our processes and systems.
  • Continuing our commitment to Indigenous-specific anti-racism and broader diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives.

To you—the over 75,000 LPNs, NPs, RNs, RPNs, and midwives we regulate—I commit to creating an environment that encourages system thinking and transformation, where we ask, “What if?" rather than defaulting to “This can't be done."  I believe that together we can achieve great things.

I look forward to engaging with partners across the province to identify opportunities for meaningful change. Your expertise and dedication are vital to the wellbeing of British Columbians. Please feel free to share your thoughts at ceo@bccnm.ca.

We acknowledge the rights and title of the First Nations on whose collective unceded territories encompass the land base colonially known as British Columbia. We give specific thanks to the hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓ speaking peoples the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) and sel̓íl̓witulh (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations and the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh-ulh Sníchim speaking Peoples the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish Nation), on whose unceded territories BCCNM’s office is located. We also give thanks for the medicines of these territories and recognize that laws, governance, and health systems tied to these lands and waters have existed here for over 9000 years.

We also acknowledge the unique and distinct rights, including rights to health and wellness, of First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples from elsewhere in Canada who now live in British Columbia. As leaders in the settler health system, we acknowledge our responsibilities to these rights under international, national, and provincial law.
