New framework for RM vacuum-assisted emergency delivery

Sep 27, 2024

The BCCNM board on Sept. 26, 2024, approved a new framework, Registered Midwives Specialized Practice Certification Framework for Vacuum-Assisted Emergency Delivery. This framework comes into effect Oct. 28, 2024.

Context

The Midwives Regulation s. 5(1)(g)(iv)(D) permits midwives to conduct a vacuum-assisted emergency delivery of a baby in accordance with the limits and conditions on services and restricted activities set out in s. 6(2) that requires a registrant to successfully complete "a certification program established, required or approved under the bylaws to ensure registrants are qualified and competent to provide the service and perform the activity."

This new certification framework will support midwives to safely and competently perform a vacuum-assisted emergency delivery of a baby.

Certification and course/program requirements

In order to be granted specialized practice certification in vacuum-assisted emergency delivery, midwives must:

  1. Complete a BCCNM-approved education course/program for vacuum-assisted emergency delivery, and
  2. Demonstrate competence by performing at least three successful vacuum-assisted deliveries under supervision.

The framework specifies course/program requirements that must include competencies that teach and assess a midwife's knowledge of vacuum-assisted delivery and skills in performing vacuum-assisted delivery.

Next steps

Development of an education course or program for vacuum-assisted emergency delivery. Once developed, this course will be submitted to BCCNM's Education Program Review Committee for review.
