On Feb. 27, 2025, the BCCNM board approved revisions to the Nurse Practitioners Scope of Practice: Advanced Procedures and Activities – Blood and Blood Products limits and conditions to align with the most up to date additional education offered for NPs and to rectify small inconsistencies found within the limits and conditions. These changes take effect March 31, 2025.
Context
Key partners in the health authorities requested the removal of outdated education examples (e.g., Blood Easy Lite) previously named in the NP Scope of Practice: Advanced Procedures and Activities – Blood and Blood Products limits and conditions in favour of more current educational opportunities within B.C.
BCCNM's previous limits requiring registrants to review the Blood Easy Lite resources as well as utilize specific recommendations or guidelines before ordering blood and blood products were revised in favour of a broader framework that allows nurse practitioners to exercise professional judgement when selecting the most appropriate evidence-based guidelines and education to achieve competency in this area.
The revision also also clarified that additional education is only required for blood transfusions, as other blood and blood products pose lower risks than transfusions. This approach aligns with the principles of right-touch regulation.
