MacBride, Matthew, RN

Consent agreement

Mar 18, 2019

On March 18, 2019, a panel of the Inquiry Committee approved a Consent Agreement between BCCNP and Matthew MacBride of Vancouver, to address conduct issues related to the following:

In 2016, the Registrant was instructed to refrain from inserting large bore IVs unless they were clinically indicated.

In 2017, despite the instruction regarding the insertion of large bore IVs, during the emergency room care of Patient A, who was intoxicated, agitated, and uttering perceived homophobic comments, the Registrant inserted a large bore IV into Patient A's hand for the administration of sedation, the effect of which was to cause undue pain to Patient A. The size of IV inserted was not clinically indicated. He also called Patient A a bigot and a worthless person in response to her offensive comments. The Registrant subsequently asked a colleague who was a witness to these events to recant her statement regarding this incident to BCCNP and to say she fabricated her initial account of events. The Registrant also discussed the BCCNP investigation openly despite having been cautioned to maintain confidentiality regarding the investigation.

In 2017, the Registrant also created false documentation to obscure the fact that no documentation was done for Patient B for an entire shift. In a separate incident, the Registrant wrote disrespectful comments on a regional memo posted on the wall of the Emergency Room.

The Registrant has voluntarily agreed to a four-month suspension and terms equivalent to a limit and condition on practice, including: a requirement to work with supervision for a period of 12 months (including random chart and practice audits with a supervisor), and a 18-month limit precluding practice in the emergency room as sole RN or as the in-charge, nurse, triage nurse, or in a supervisory capacity of any kind. He has agreed to additional terms including disclosure to employers and remedial education.

The Inquiry Committee is satisfied that the terms will protect the public.
