ADVISORY: B.C. nurses job action

BCCNM is aware that nurses in British Columbia have initiated job action. Nurses have the right to participate in the collective bargaining process. BCCNM is not a party to collective bargaining, which is a matter between employers and unions. Our role is to regulate nurses and midwives in the public interest.

Survey reminder: nursing standards

BCCNM invites all nurses to complete two surveys about nursing standards of practice.

The first survey focuses on your experiences with the LPN, RN, RPN, and NP Professional Standards and the RPN Code of Ethics. Your feedback will support the revision of these standards. The second survey explores how nurses use and apply standards of practice, including the workplace changes and trends.

Volunteering as a nurse

When volunteering as a nurse you may not have the resources and supports you're used to having when working in a traditional health-care organization. You still need to meet all BCCNM standards and comply with relevant legislation and regulations. Remember, you need to have a practising licence to be able to volunteer as a nurse.

Regulatory supervision

Regulatory supervision is more than “watching" a student. It is a professional decision-making process that uses assessment, communication, risk evaluation, and ongoing supervision planning to protect clients while supporting student learning.

Discipline and public notices


BCCNM publishes a variety of professional conduct notices on its website. These notices include criminal record review non-compliance, consent agreements, Investigation Committee notices, summary protection orders, and discipline notices. While all of these notices are public information, only exceptional outcomes (i.e., Investigation Committee order, discipline order) and circumstances (i.e., discipline hearing) are highlighted in the licensee newsletters.
