Message from the Registrar

Dear midwives and nurses,

In late 2022, the provincial government passed new legislation for regulated health professions in B.C. The Health Professions and Occupations Act (“the HPOA”, formerly Bill 36), which will replace the Health Professions Act, is not yet in effect. However, BCCNM and B.C.’s 15 other health profession regulators are working together and with government to understand the changes and plan for its in-effect date.

Survey: cultural safety and humility standard and resources

We'd like your input on how midwives and nurses use the new standard and resources in practice. Your feedback also helps us understand overall awareness. The survey deadline is June 15.

Pharmacists can now prescribe contraceptives, treatments for minor ailments

As of June 1, 2023, people in B.C. can get prescriptions from their pharmacist for contraceptives and medications to treat 21 minor ailments, such as allergies, shingles, cold sores, pink eye, and uncomplicated urinary tract infections.

Inquiry, Discipline, and Monitoring updates


BCCNM publishes a variety of professional conduct notices on its website. These notices include consent agreements, Discipline Committee and Inquiry Committee notices, and Inquiry and Discipline hearing notices. While all of these notices are public information, only exceptional outcomes (i.e., Inquiry Committee order, Discipline order, hearing outcome) and circumstances (i.e., discipline hearing) are highlighted in registrant newsletters.

Office closed
