New legislation will replace the Health Professions Act

On Oct. 19, 2022, B.C.'s Minister of Health introduced new legislation to replace the Health Professions Act (HPA). On Nov. 24, 2022, the new legislation—the Health Professions and Occupations Act (HPOA)—received Royal Assent.

The HPOA lays the groundwork for transforming how regulators fulfill our mandate to protect the public. We will provide nurses and midwives with regular updates over the coming months. Read on to find out what we know so far.

Practice updates


 

Do you have enough prescription pads?

Please submit prescription pad orders by Dec. 19, 2022 and ensure you have enough pads to last over the break. Controlled prescription pad orders will not be processed between Dec. 20, 2022 and Jan. 3, 2023.

Medication practice standard revised

The Medication practice standard has been revised to include principles that outline the responsibilities for when nurses administer or dispense medications within their autonomous scope of practice. These changes take effect Jan. 5, 2023.

Scope of practice revised for LPNs and RPNs

The BCCNM board approved amendments to the LPN and RPN scope of practice standards relating to allergy testing, ankle-brachial index testing, and ear irrigation. These revisions take effect Jan. 5, 2023.

Cultural Safety, Humility and Anti-Racism Practice Standard adopted by 11 more regulators

More than 28,000 B.C. health professionals can now reference clear expectations to eliminate Indigenous-specific racism and foster culturally safe care in their practice, thanks to a joint initiative between 11 BC health profession regulatory colleges.

This new standard is adapted from the standard BCCNM and the College of Physicians and Surgeons of BC established.

Board election results

Congratulations to Rose Melynk and Tanya Momtazian! They were both successful candidates in the BCCNM board election. Rose and Tanya will begin their three-year terms in January 2023.

Inquiry, Discipline, and Monitoring updates


BCCNM publishes a variety of professional conduct notices on its website. These notices include consent agreements, Discipline Committee and Inquiry Committee notices, and Inquiry and Discipline hearing notices. While all of these notices are public information, only exceptional outcomes (i.e., Inquiry Committee order, Discipline order, hearing outcome) and circumstances (i.e., discipline hearing) are highlighted in registrant newsletters.

Office hours
