Consent agreement

Jun 8, 2023

On June 8, 2023, a panel of the Inquiry Committee approved a Consent Agreement between BCCNM and the registrant to address issues that occurred between Feb. 4 and July 14, 2020, related to failing to accurately document narcotics medication administration and narcotic waste for six months and diversion and use of narcotics while on duty on two occasions. The registrant was diagnosed with and admitted to a disability with a causal relationship to the practice issues via an independent medical report and has agreed to comply with treatment recommendations.

The registrant has voluntarily agreed to the following terms:

    1. A suspension of nursing registration for one month and a reprimand.

    2. A restriction on handling, dispensing, administering, or wasting narcotics, benzodiazepines, controlled substances, and the “zed" class of drugs for one year, followed by direct supervision for the second year of practice.

    3. Medical monitoring for at least three years and disclosure of treatment and monitoring recommendations to relevant employer representative(s).

    4. A limit from working in the emergency department, interventional radiology, ICU, CCU, CVU, PAR, labour and delivery, or pediatrics for two years.

    5. A limit from working night shifts, as the sole nurse on duty, and in the in-charge position for six months.

    6. A limit on supervising students or orienting new staff members to the workplace for six months.

    7. A learning plan that will remain in effect for 24 months and regular meetings with a workplace mentor to ensure progress on the learning plan.

    8. Remedial education in areas of professional standards, medication administration, and documentation.

The Agreement will remain in place for a minimum of three years of continuous nursing practice.

The name of the registrant has been withheld in accordance with section 39.3 (4) (a) of the Health Professions Act for the purpose of not identifying the personal health information of the registrant respecting the condition.

The Inquiry Committee is satisfied that the terms will protect the public.
