Overview

Certification allows midwives to perform certain restricted activities. You can apply for certification if you meet the requirements for the certification program you're seeking (including completing BCCNM-recognized certification courses and any other BCCNM requirements).

Applying for certification

NOTE: We are currently upgrading our systems. To apply for certification, email registermidwives@bccnm.ca and include your program completion certificate and other required assessment(s).

Midwives must apply for certification within one year of completing the required certification program, must hold practising licensure, and must be in good standing.

Standards

BCCNM recognizes certification in the following eight areas. Certification requirements are listed in each standard:

Certified midwife standards and competencies

Renewing and maintaining eligibility

Licensees who hold certification to perform restricted activities must meet additional currency requirements. In addition to meeting currency requirements for practising licensure, certified licensees:

  • Maintain recent clinical experience and provide at least one course of care or treatment, which includes performance of a restricted activity, for each certification you hold every three years.
  • Maintain competence in your area(s) of certification and engage in continuing professional development
  • Include at least one learning goal related to your area of certification in your professional develop plan and evaluation of learning

Re-applying for certification

If you don't meet the Quality Assurance requirements or have not practiced in the certification area in the last three years, you will not be eligible for certification. To be eligible again, you will need to complete a recognized education program/course.
