Midwives have a legal and ethical responsibility to safeguard personal and health information (PHI), defined as
recorded information about an identifiable individual that is related to the individual's health or the provision of health.
This responsibility includes complying with federal and provincial laws regarding the collection of PHI as well as maintaining and storing records containing PHI.
BCCNM encourages midwives to review the requirements and ensure they and their practice are compliant. This includes getting consent to collect PHI and understanding how platform(s) that support in the collecting of client or prospective client PHI operate and store this information.
We also encourage you to connect with the
Midwives Association of BC (MABC), who offer support and suggested courses for keeping current on privacy expectations in your midwifery practice.
