New legislation will replace the Health Professions Act

On Oct. 19, 2022, B.C.'s Minister of Health introduced new legislation to replace the Health Professions Act (HPA). On Nov. 24, 2022, the new legislation—the Health Professions and Occupations Act (HPOA)—received Royal Assent.

The HPOA lays the groundwork for transforming how regulators fulfill our mandate to protect the public. We will provide nurses and midwives with regular updates over the coming months. Read on to find out what we know so far.

NOV. 7, 2022

New PHO order expands list of flu vaccine providers—midwives included

The Provincial Health Officer (PHO) posted a new order allowing health professionals authorized to administer COVID-19 vaccines, who meet specific conditions, to also administer influenza vaccines. The order went into effect Nov. 4, 2022.

NOV. 24, 2022

New medications and substances standard for midwives

The delayed in-effect date of March 2, 2023 for this new standard is intended to give midwives and their clients, clinics, and other key audiences time to prepare. BCCNM will also be providing learning resources to support midwives.

Cultural Safety, Humility and Anti-Racism Practice Standard adopted by 11 more regulators

More than 28,000 B.C. health professionals can now reference clear expectations to eliminate Indigenous-specific racism and foster culturally safe care in their practice, thanks to a joint initiative between 11 BC health profession regulatory colleges.

This new standard is adapted from the standard BCCNM and the College of Physicians and Surgeons of BC established.

AGM recording

On Nov. 23, 2022, BCCNM hosted its annual general meeting (AGM) using an online platform. The recording is now available.

Inquiry, Discipline, and Monitoring updates

BCCNM publishes a variety of professional conduct notices on its website. These notices include consent agreements, Discipline Committee and Inquiry Committee notices, and Inquiry and Discipline hearing notices. While all of these notices are public information, only exceptional outcomes (i.e., Inquiry Committee order, Discipline order, hearing outcome) and circumstances (i.e., discipline hearing) are highlighted in registrant newsletters.
