LPN, RN, RPN Scope of Practice project

On June 2, 2025, the LPN, RN and RPN scope of practice documents were rescinded, and the content transitioned to practice standards and learning resources.

Access the practice standards and learning resources:

Why did we make this change?

The Health Professions and Occupations Act (HPOA) is new legislation approved in 2022, but not yet in force. It will replace the Health Professions Act (HPA). The HPOA requires all standards to be included in BCCNM bylaws.

IMPORTANT: The standards, limits, and conditions have not changed, and neither will your day-to-day practice. Only the format of the standards and where you find the information on the BCCNM website is different.

The following video explains why we made ng this change, and includes helpful tips for navigating the website and where to find the standards.

Feedback

As part of our consultation on this project, we received a lot of very valuable feedback from LPNs, RNs, and RPNs across the province who practice in a variety of roles and settings. We appreciate your time and expertise!

We heard that nurses and others found iit challenging to find the information they need in the previous Scope documents, because they were lengthy and complex. The intermingling of narrative content with standards, limits, and conditions was also confusing. These challenges were addressed as part of this work.

We'll be rolling out additional learning resources over the coming weeks and months.
